June, 13, 2013, Dallas, TX- The face is important; its the first thing people notice about us and gives them an impression of our age, personality and capabilities. As we advance in age, wrinkles and sagging skin can quickly give away our ages, and people, women especially, hate for people to know how old they are. And nothing is worse than having a person think you are older than you actually are. Its the need to defy the ravages of time that drive people to their cosmetic surgeons for a facelift.

Before making the decision to have a facelift, patients want to know: How long will the results of my facelift last?

A study published late last year in the Journal of Reconstructive and Plastic Surgery, found that the youthful appearance attained by undergoing a facelift lasted approximately 5 years after the original surgery for the majority of patients.

Researchers from the study evaluated the photographs of 50 patients, who had a face lift five years earlier. Using a strict set of criteria, which included measurements of the jowl height and the chin to neck angle, assessment of lines that appear from the nose to mouth and mouth to chin and a scoring of the patients overall appearance, the researchers found that facelift patients appearance was remarkably improved.

Scoring suggested that 76 percent of patients will still look younger 5 year after a facelift than they did prior to facelift, researchers said. That is an exceptional rate of success and should give patients the assurance they need if they have any doubt about the having the procedure.

Facelifts have such a high rate of success that it ranked within the top five most popular cosmetic surgeries in 2012. The ASAPs 2012 Annual Statistics showed that while some cosmetic surgeries like liposuction and breast augmentations experienced a decrease, facelift actually increased by 6 percent.

Other popular facial procedures included nose reshaping (rhinoplasty) and eyelifts which increased by 4 percent in 2012.

Even though women made up the majority of preformed facelifts, men are becoming more accepting of plastic surgery. Facelifts form men increased by 6 percent overall in 2012. An increasingly competitive and younger workforce is the motivating factor behind the rise in cosmetic surgery among men. Rhinoplasty and eyelifts were also popular procedures for men.

Of course, even though the ASPS study showed that the youthful appearance achieved after undergoing a facelift can last 5 years following surgery, the skills of the a patients plastic surgeon are also key to long-lasting results.
