March, 20, 2013, Katy, TX- If you have been thinking about a nose job to improve your profile and make your face more proportionate then you might want to think about combining a chin augmentation with nose reshaping to obtain balanced results, Italian researchers say.
Combining these procedures researchers at University of Verona found gave plastic surgery patients long-term satisfaction with their procedures and showed little change in the stability of the chin shape.
Dr. Dario Bertossi, associate professor in the surgery department at the university and his team of researchers followed a group of 90 patients who had chin augmentation and nose reshaping between 2002 and 2004 and conducted regular follow-ups over a three year period to determine the effectiveness of combining nose and chin surgery, according to health24.com.
Three years after their procedure, 45.6 percent of the patients who had their chin reduced exhibited no significant changes. Fifty-two percent of the patients, who had bone added to their chin, maintained a stable profile over the same three year period.
In the study, Dr. Bertossi explained the relationship between the chin, neck and nose influences the perception of an aesthetically proportionate face, health.com reported. For some patients, a nose job alone cannot completely balance the features of the face. Adding a better contour or strengthening the jaw line by either adding bone or taking some away can give rhinoplastly patients more satisfaction with the balance of their features post-surgery.
We can for sure improve facial profile with stable results with rhinoplasty alone, but the association with genioplasty (chin augmentation) is fundamental and necessary to achieve the best aesthetic result, Dr. Bertossi said.
Chin augmentations and rhinoplasty are frequently performed together because it will reduce the cost for the patient, but this study shows there are aesthetic reasons to have both performed at the same time, especially for individuals who are certain they need both procedures to achieve a balance with their facial features.
Having these two procedures together will also prevent the patient from having to go through different recovery periods. Genioplasty and rhinoplasty are extensive surgeries that require several weeks of recovery, but the results will be worth it.
