Blepharoplasty Q & A
What is blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic surgery designed to improve the appearance of your eyes and eyelids. During treatment, Dr. Freeman uses surgical tools to remove excess muscle, skin, and fat from your upper and lower eyelids. That rejuvenates your skin, helping you look more youthful and alert.
Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic treatment, but it can also have functional benefits. For example, if sagging eyelids affect your vision, blepharoplasty can make it easier to see when you’re reading, driving, or watching a movie.
What types of issues can blepharoplasty correct?
Dr. Freeman uses blepharoplasty to correct various issues, including:
- Drooping or sagging eyelid skin
- Bags beneath the eyes
- Fat cushions beneath the eyes
- Impaired vision due to excess eyelid skin
- Irritation due to extra folds or eyelid skin
You might also benefit from blepharoplasty if you have wrinkles or fine lines around your eyes that give you the appearance of someone who’s chronically tired or worried.
What happens during a blepharoplasty consultation?
During a blepharoplasty consultation, Dr. Freeman reviews your medical records, asks about your goals, and performs a physical exam. You qualify for treatment if he identifies signs of aging, like droopy eyelids or puffy bags under your eyes. Then, Dr. Freeman uses the information he collects to develop a custom surgical care plan.
What happens during blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty is an outpatient procedure that takes between 30-60 minutes for each eyelid. The surgery occurs under IV sedation, so you’re asleep the entire time.
Dr. Freeman uses surgical tools during treatment to carefully trim excess skin and tissue. Then, he repositions your fat deposits and tightens the underlying muscles to minimize the appearance of wrinkles and lines. Dr. Freeman makes all of the incisions behind your eyelids, so there aren’t any visible scars.
What is recovery like after blepharoplasty?
After blepharoplasty, it’s normal to experience bruising, swelling, and redness around your eyes. Dr. Freeman explains how to use lubricating eye drops and asks you to wear sunglasses when you go outside.
Avoid strenuous exercise for 7-10 days and get plenty of rest. About a week after the procedure, you visit Dr. Freeman for a checkup, so he can monitor your recovery.
