More Americans are opting for cosmetic surgery than ever before, and experts have long speculated that the rise in the procedures is somehow tethered to the increase in personal technology and social media. A new survey by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) seems to confirm those speculations.

News Medical explains that the academy’s poll asked specifically about patient motivations and revealed that more patients are requesting cosmetic surgeries because they are unsatisfied with their appearance on social media. When once we only saw our reflections in the bathroom mirror, now that mirror follows us all day in the form of a backward-facing camera on all major smart phones.

Similarly, social-media trends have changed recently. Before, selfies were solely tethered to profile pictures, but new social media platforms, including Snap Chat, Vine and Instagram, encourage photo and video sharing, giving rise to the practice of sharing selfies with the world on a daily basis.

In Light Of 2013 Cosmetic Surgery Statistics, The Results Of The Poll Seem To Hold True

In one sense, this means that our perceived cosmetic flaws are always on our minds. Each picture snapped reminds the user of their crooked nose or newly formed wrinkles, prompting more people to dwell on and seek to remedy these issues.

According to the AAFPRS, the statistics gathered on facial procedures support these claims. Between 2012 and 2013, the number of nose jobs rose by 10 percent, and requests for eyelid lifts increased by 6 percent.

There is also a hidden insight among these numbers: Cosmetic surgery is no longer just for older adults. Younger generations dominate these social media platforms. The poll also revealed that more people who are 35 and younger are opting for procedures.

Bullying Is Also A Common Motivator For Younger Patients Seeking Cosmetic Surgeries

Earlier in the year the issue of teens and cosmetic surgery made its way into popular consciousness. The truth of the matter is that the vast majority of teens who undergo these procedures have them as a result of being bullied. Rhinoplasties in particular are common among that demographic and serve to give the patient more confidence and security during their formative years.

Whatever your motivation to undergo a cosmetic surgery, we recommend sitting down with an experienced cosmetic surgeon like Dr. Freeman to discuss the procedure and make sure its right for you. To schedule your consultation, Call Us At 281-599-9445 Today!
